A confession. I don’t particularly like beat ’em ups. The only way I can see myself playing one is if it would conform to somewhat modern standards: look and play fluid, be visceral, be challenging yet not frustrating. Well, I’m not sure I would like it that way, I never played a brawler that suits my tastes (but if you have suggestions the comments are all yours). Altered Beast doesn’t have any of these qualities, sadly, and thus isn’t really my favorite game. Sorry Sega, who published this game for DOS in 1990, porting it from their 1988 arcade game!

Ace of Aces is a combat flight simulator published by Accolade in 1986. That makes it the same age as me, but I believe I’ve aged a lot better, thank you very much. The game was released for many platforms, so even if you were not a dossie you might recognize it.
What? PowerShooter? With a P? Yes, this was innocently hiding in a folder named “1941”, but obviously, it’s anything but 1941. It’s PowerShooter. Screenshot proof.
I don’t think 1941 was ever released on PC anyway. Powershooter is your basic topdown shoot ’em up, featuring enemy airplanes, bullets, rockets, powerups, boats, turrets and, quite original, volcanoes. (more…)
3D Pitfall is a 1995 game by J. Shramko. I heard about the Atari game “Pitfall” before, so before starting I wondered if I’d get some sort of fiendishly difficult 3D platformer here.
Well, my hopes were rather quickly smashed. This game is not quite related to Pitfall. It’s a 3D Tetris game. I’ve played a fair bit of Blockout (also to be reviewed on the site, around number 100 in the queue) and this looks very, very alike. I think it has a higher resolution, but this actually does not help the game as the rotation animations aren’t nearly as smooth as I remember them from Blockout. Also, it’s made 5 years later. (more…)
